For the 54 million Americans with disabilities, access means
simply being able to use, enjoy and participate in the many aspects
of society, including work, commerce and leisure activities. Transportation
is a vital link that allows full participation. Jackson Transportation
Authority is committed to providing a transportation system that
provides equal access for all residents of Jackson County. With
the advent of accessibility standards for electronic and information
technology under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973,
JTA is endeavoring to be at the forefront in ensuring accessibility
to technology used by the Department to accomplish its vital mission.
The American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public
transportation entities to provide accessible regular fixed route
service to persons with disabilities. No qualified individual
with a disability (permanent or temporary) shall, by reason of
the disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied
the benefits of the transportation services.
Comparable paratransit (Reserve-A-Ride) services must be provided
to individuals who are unable to use the regular fixed route system
because of their disability. Those who can only use the paratransit
system and meet the eligibility criteria will receive ADA certification
for the PRIORITY PARATRANSIT SERVICE.
1. Those who are unable to independently board, ride or disembark
from accessible vehicles at the bus stop/station.
2. Those who have an impairment related condition preventing them
from
getting to or from a bus stop station to board or disembark.
(Physical barriers alone i.e.: lack of curb cuts, snow, etc..,
do not by themselves confer eligibility).
3. Those who cannot recognize the destination and disembark.
4. Those who would be unable to transfer to connect with other
modes
of transportation.
Please note: A functional assessment is required with written
documentation to receive certification.
Applications for certification can be obtained at:
